Nine Hilarious Hungry Dragons

Try something new at Kowloon
It seems sort of dangerous, don’t you think? Not so! says Kowloon Restaurant, which offers one of the most complex menus in any comedy venue on the east coast—and has for the last 20 years. It’s a full-on restaurant with a stage and a lonely microphone. Kowloon, by the way, means “nine dragons,” and it’s up to you to discover why they named the restaurant that.
Whether your tastes run to sushi, udon noodles, or steaks, Kowloon Restaurant will provide—even during the comedy shows! It’s a far cry from the lucky-to-have nachos, burgers, or assorted fried food available at most beer-sticky stand-up comedy joints.
The restaurant itself merits its own review. It has won both culinary and comedy awards, and impressed locals and travelers alike while at the same time hosting big-name comedians and people on their way up in the ha ha-world. Heard of Robie Printz? Paul D’Angelo?
They’ve headlined there.
Every Friday and Saturday, Kowloon offers shows of various calibers. Check out the website (www.kowloonrestaurant.com) for directions, more information, and to purchase tickets. Kowloon takes the idea of comedy shows and adds a touch of class and taste, even if the performers remain just as crass and folksy as we demand of them. As a concept, it’s creative. As a well-established enterprise, it’s hard to beat.
Though slightly outside the city, Kowloon restaurant and komedy klub is well worth the trip. Tired of the same-old same-old weekend rut? Hankering for something doubly daring? How about something both tasty and funny (but not funny tasting!) at the same time? Head up to Saugus—it’ll only take 15 minutes to get there, and you’ll leave with a stomach aching from good food and incessant laughter. Just make sure you chew your food thoroughly while listening to the jokes—and keep some water on hand just in case. ■
