Senate Race Takes Flight
Cape Air Founder Dan Wolf for State Senate
To notice the wealth of environmental beauty on The Cape and Islands, all you have to do is board a flight on Cape Air and jet to one of the stunning locales across Southeastern Massachusetts. Dan Wolf, who founded Cape Air over 20 years ago, has made it his effort to create a company that not only values its employees, but is wildly successful and environmentally friendly. Wolf is currently on the campaign trail for Massachusetts State Senate and his core values and goals for making a better Massachusetts can be seen by looking at Cape Air as a model airplane if you will. All of the pieces are equally important, but it is crucial that each piece of the model work collaboratively with the others to create a cohesive, beautiful model. If you are anything like me, model building was not your strong suit and you often finished the plane with extra pieces in the box. Dan Wolf’s model for Massachusetts is not one of my model airplanes.
Starting with a few employees and one plane running from Boston to Provincetown, Dan Wolf has nurtured Cape Air into the hugely successful small airline that it is today. With over 800 employees and service in seven different regions, Cape Air is a modern day success story.
Wolf grew up in Philadelphia, P.A. and was raised by his mother, a University of Pennsylvania history professor and a local businessman. He was a political science major at Wesleyan College in Connecticut and had been a visitor to the Cape and islands for a long time before settling there. He quickly became a valued member of the community, and Cape Air took off.
Wolf learned to fly in 1977 and attended mechanic school before opening Cape Air. He worked as a plane mechanic and a commercial pilot and the seed for Cape Air was planted. The company was opened in 1988 and has been at the forefront of progressive politics, both socially and environmentally. Wolf said Cape Air has always been a “deeply involved and engaged company.”
Wolf is no stranger to public service. He has served on numerous boards for a broad spectrum of organizations.
“This is not by any stretch my first venture in public service,” Wolf said. “Government has a role in achieving the vision of the private sector.”
Dan Wolf’s political views were largely shaped during the idealism of the 1960s and 1970s. He grew up in a very liberal and informed household and Wolf strives for similar ideals in his views on politics. He believes that corporations have grown too large and that government has been too lax in their regulation.
“We have ceded to much power to private corporations,” Wolf said.
As the father of three daughters, Wolf is concerned about the direction the country is going and if elected Senator, he hopes that he will be able to change the tide. Wolf is fervently dedicated to maintaining the natural splendor of the Cape and Islands and will fight for economic growth that is mindful of the balance and relationship between economic growth and environmental responsibility. He puts his money where his mouth is. Cape Air is currently home to the largest solar energy operation in the state of Massachusetts.
“I’ve been more and more concerned that the country that we are handing off to our children is not the country we were trying to make in the ‘60s and ‘70s,” Wolf said. “The real challenge right now is an economy that works, but an economy that works environmentally as well.”
Wolf will be campaigning like crazy across the state. The primary elections are only a few weeks away on September 14 and the general election will be held on November 4. If elected, Dan Wolf will set to work putting in motion legislation that will turn Massachusetts into the perfect model airplane. Working together economically and environmentally.
